OIL PRESSURE SENSOR
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Get a
Harley-Davidson oil pressure sender p/n 74406-87 from your local H-D dealer.
2.
Determine if
the new sensor will fit in place of the old oil idiot light sender. You might need a 1/8 NPT 45 degree adapter to
allow the installation of the sensor on older models. EVOs can use the
Harley-Davidson adapter p/n 26052-92A.
3.
Remove the
idiot light sender and replace it with the new sensor, plumbing as necessary
for clearance. Do not use teflon tape to seal the
threads. Sealing the threads can
insulate the sensor from the engine and interrupt the electrical signal. Loctite liquid pipe
sealant is OK to use.
4.
Connect the
idiot light wire to the new sensor terminal marked WK.
5.
Connect the
WhiTek supplied cable to the sensor terminal marked G.
6.
Route the wire
to the ECS MCU circuit card. The wire is
long enough to be routed under the gas tank, down behind the manifold (left
side of bike), in through the backing plate slots with the other system wires,
and up the right side of the circuit card to the J2 connector.
7.
Unplug the J2
receptacle from the J2 header (depress latch while pulling on receptacle). Avoid pulling on the wires in the
receptacle. Pull only on the receptacle
itself, to the extent possible.
Un-plugging J2 and J6 receptacles together makes
it easier to remove J2.
8.
Poke the wire
terminal into the J2-11 position in the receptacle. This is the third hole from the right (top
side of card) end of the receptacle on the top (latch side). The pin numbers are indicated on the MCU
circuit card and are also embossed on the face of the receptacle in small
numerals. The terminal must be inserted
with the crimp ears towards the top of the receptacle.
9.
Tug lightly on
the wire to insure that it is latched in the receptacle.
10.
Plug the
receptacle back into the header, making sure that the latch engages.
11.
Cut the tie
wrap that is just below J6, route the wire with the others there, and replace
the tie wrap. Tie-wrap the wire to the
other system wires between the cover and backing plates (next to the air
filter). Tie wrap the wire in other
places as required to keep it out of harms way.
12.
If not already
done, install the new PROM in the MCU board according to the PROM changing
instructions.
13.
In the Options
submenu, access the OIL PRES. J2-11 command and push the middle button so that
the bottom line reads INSTALLED.
