Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are its features?
Electronic fuel injection, single-fire ignition, adjustable rev limiter, battery voltmeter, digital tachometer, air temperature, oil temperature*, oil pressure*, oil loss engine kill*, altimeter*. Mixture, spark timing and more are adjustable while riding. New features are easily incorporated into existing units. * items require optional sensor.
2. What size does it come in?
It comes with a 46-mm throttle bore. This fits common aftermarket manifolds, such as the Screaming Eagle, S&S E series, etc. It is also available in a 42-mm bore to fit flanged stock manifolds and Sportster aftermarket manifolds.
3. How does it compare to other fuel injection systems?
There is no comparison. The WhiTek ECS will run any Harley engine, Sportster to EVO, stock to stroker, normally aspirated or supercharged. It will work with any cam, displacement, or compression ratio. It includes a control/display unit that is used to adjust it while riding. It is easy to install, and results in a neat, clean installation, since all of the components are contained in one unit.
4. Can I put it on my Stroker?
Yes. It will run any Harley engine; stroker, Sportster, shovelhead, 4-valve heads, etc.
5. Do I need a computer to adjust it?
No. All adjustments are made through the control/display unit, which is handlebar mounted.
6. Is the system complete?
Yes, 1990 and later year models require an aftermarket intake manifold with a flange and throttle cables. For single-fire ignition, dual spark coils are required.
7. What coils should I use?
Any 3 Ohm or greater coils. The system will drive the stock coil dual-fire. It will drive coils that require "dwell control".
8. How long does it take to install?
About three to five hours on a stock bike. (It has been installed in less than three hours.)
9. Do I need a dyno to tune it?
No, but it lends itself to dynotuning due to its precision and ease of adjustment.
10. Can I customize the installation?
Yes. A popular customization is to mount the control/display unit in the dash or fairing. Others have remote mounted the MCU circuit card to allow the use of aftermarket air cleaner covers, a velocity stack, or to mount it on a Buell.
11. How long is the warranty?
One year on materials and workmanship.
12. What if I break down while on the road?
We will send replacement parts by overnight delivery service. Also, most of the parts can be replaced in a pinch from any auto parts store. The systems have proven to be extremely reliable, so a breakdown due to an ECS failure is not something that commonly occurs.
13. Does it have an oxygen sensor?
No. It is an open loop system. There is no sensor to fail.
14. How do you adjust for altitude?
The mixture is leaned out for altitude by entering the altitude into the control/display unit. Our optional barometric pressure sensor will automatically adjust the mixture for altitude, and also show the altitude on the display.
15. Does vibration bother it?
No. It is of very robust construction.
16. Can I change my camshaft?
Yes. The system can be adjusted via the control/display unit to work with any engine with any combination of parts.
17. Will it work with a supercharger?
Yes. It has been successfully installed with various blowers and turbochargers with excellent results.
18. How do you adjust the timing?
The engine is static timed during system installation using the control/display unit. While the engine is running, the current spark advance is shown on the control/display unit in degrees before top dead center (BTDC). The timing curve can be adjusted while riding the bike. It is the most adjustable ignition system on the market.
19. How do you adjust the mixture?
Through the control/display unit. The mixture can be changed in a manner analogous to a carburetor, where the main jet, midrange jet, and idle jet is adjusted, or adjustments can be made directly to the mixture map which changes the mixture just at the point where the engine is running.
20. How much horsepower will it make?
Dyno testing has shown the unit to make better power and a wider torque band than the best carburetors on the market. The unit will typically provide a greater than 20 horsepower increase on stock bikes. The stock injectors are good up to about 100 horsepower. If your engine will exceed this, higher flowing injectors may be installed.
21. What kind of mileage can I expect?
Road testing has shown that most aftermarket carburetors combined with a camshaft and pipes on the standard Harley will get about 35 MPG. The same engine will get 50-60 MPG with the engine control system.
22. Is it compatible with kickstart only?
Yes.
23. How much electrical power does it use? About the same as a bright headlight. Most of the power is used by the fuel pump, which draws about 5 amps.
24. Will it fit on a Buell? Yes, but it requires that the MCU circuit card be remote mounted so that the unit will clear the Buell frame. We can supply extended wires for this purpose.
